Wärtsilä

Wärtsilä’s purpose is enabling sustainable societies with smart technology. We shape our markets by generating transformative results through collaboration, partnerships, market insight and active engagement in ecosystems. Working with NCL Ferry is another example of this in action.

Wärtsilä is proud to be part of this project and the long term relationship with NCL Ferry.  Wartsila delivered an integrated package of solutions that will enable this ferry to be among the world’s most efficient and environmentally sustainable vessels.

At the heart of this ferry is the Wärtsilä hybrid propulsion solution. This will incorporate four highly efficient  Wärtsilä 31DF  dual-fuel engines capable of operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biogas which reduce CO2 emissions by 50% compared to the previous vessel. Wärtsilä will also supply the  LNG storage, supply and control systems, as well as the  thrusters, catalysators, controls, and the integrated electrical and automation systems. The latter will incorporate an energy and power management system to optimise the use and operation of the hybrid power solution.

NCL Ferry also selected the Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum system which is a unique combination of control systems for navigation, automation, power and propulsion, as well as the Wärtsilä Data Bridge platform. The Data Bridge solution enables advanced data analytics that gives insights into the vessel’s performance, thereby unlocking further potential for enhancing the vessel’s operational and technical efficiency

This vessel will also be a floating laboratory linking to the Wartsila Smart Technology Hub – this will allow real time monitoring and management of the vessel to improve efficiency and also allow for further R&D of solutions that can help the marine industry meet the targets and environmental requirements in the future.

The Smart Technology Hub is a new centre of research, product development and production, in Vaskiluoto, Vaasa. The Smart Technology Hub is the latest tangible step in Wärtsilä’s vision of smart shipping and a smart energy sector.
