Our smiling Project Manager for the New building

Let’s meet Jonas Teir. The Project Manager for the newbuilding of the ferry Aurora Botnia.

Jonas spends most of his time in Rauma, where the new ferry for Wasaline is being built. Jonas has been at sea since 2003, when he started the deck and machine repairman degree at Ålands Seamans school . Later he has studied in Turku, Finland, to get a bachelor’s degree in Machine engineering. Jonas started at Wasaline in 2016, working on board Wasa Express. He has a lot of technical skills about the machinery, so this is a great advantage with the job he has today.

Jonas lives in Närpes, 70 km from Vaasa, where he has lived all his life, when not at sea. Now he has a partner and two children, 5- and 2-years old. The kids take most of his time when he is at home. His hunting hobby he has had to skip for a while.

What is the job like?

Most of the time he lives and works in Rauma, some 2,5 hours drive from his home. He is coordinating everything around the building of the ferry. He is reviewing the drawings and examining and approving the production. In the beginning it is more about examining and approving the steel production and painting. As the building is proceeding it becomes more inspections of different kind of equipment. Later it will be more of commissioning of systems.

With a small team the challenge is to have enough time for everything. It is very much about prioritizing and, when possible, delegating things. “There are different kind of Factory Acceptance Tests every week, sometimes every day, and it is not possible for me to attend them all. These tests take place all over the globe”, says Jonas.

It is a very intensive and busy time, but at the same time very interesting. “Already now I have learned a lot about newbuilding of a ferry”, says Jonas. When you meet Jonas, he is always a very positive person. He is a very calm person and doesn’t get easily angry. This is a very good feature in this job!
